Get Involved

New to Sailing?

Thank you for coming along to visit Peterhead Sailing Club.

If you are interested in getting involved, we are pleased to offer a reduced-rate club membership of just £20 for your first season to anyone who has attended one of our open days or a course with the Aberdeenshire Sailing Trust.

This introductory membership gives you the opportunity to become part of the club, meet our members, get on the water, and see what our club is all about before committing.

We are a relaxed and welcoming volunteer-run sailing club based in Peterhead, offering opportunities for both adults and juniors to get out on the water, build confidence, and enjoy sailing at their own pace.

About the Club

At Peterhead Sailing Club we focus on providing opportunities for members to continue sailing, gain experience, and enjoy being part of a friendly sailing community.

We run a mixture of:

  • Social sailing

  • Club racing

  • Trips to Boddam

  • BBQs and social evenings

  • Family-friendly events

  • Safety boat volunteering and race support

Racing is completely optional and many members simply enjoy getting out on the water socially.

A typical club session might involve sailing, supporting racing from the safety boats, chatting in the clubhouse or simply enjoying time on the water. During the main season we usually sail on Friday evenings, with additional events and activities organised throughout the summer. Outside of summer, club sailing generally takes place on Saturdays.

Learning to Sail

We work closely with the Aberdeenshire Sailing Trust, a local sailing school and charity based our of our club that delivers training, courses, after-school clubs and progression opportunities led by qualified RYA instructors.

The Sailing Trust provides the formal training.
The club provides opportunities to continue sailing afterwards and build confidence and experience on the water.

For courses and training sessions, boats and equipment are provided by the Sailing Trust. Club boats may also be available to hire during club sessions, subject to availability.

Adult Sailing

If you are completely new to sailing, we usually recommend starting with an RYA Level 1 course through the Aberdeenshire Sailing Trust.

If you already have some sailing experience and feel comfortable on the water, you may be suitable for:

For normal club sailing sessions, we generally recommend sailors are sailing at around:

  • RYA Level 2 standard (Adults)

  • RYA Youth Stage 3 standard (Juniors)

or are otherwise comfortable sailing independently.

You can view all adult courses here:

Junior Sailing

The Aberdeenshire Sailing Trust runs a range of junior and youth programmes throughout the year.

Afterschool Club

For Primary 3 to S1 pupils, held on Mondays.

Scurvy Pirates

A fun introduction to sailing for younger children aged 5–7.

RYA Youth Stages

The Sailing Trust also runs RYA Stage 1 and progressive youth sailing courses.

For junior sailors who have completed Stage 1 or above, the club usually runs “Fun Fridays” during the summer holidays, offering relaxed sailing and on-the-water activities in a fun social environment.

Juniors are generally sailors under 16, although sailors of any age are welcome to sail with us if they have the appropriate skills and confidence on the water.

Getting Involved

There are plenty of ways to get involved at the club, both on and off the water before attending any courses:

Members can:

  • Crew or helm boats

  • Help run racing (no experience needed)

  • Assist from the safety boats

  • Volunteer around the clubhouse and events

  • Develop confidence and experience on the water

No previous volunteering experience is needed, members simply learn as they go.

Your £20 introductory membership includes:

  • Full club membership for your first season

  • Access to club facilities

  • The ability to take part in club activities and sailing sessions

We always encourage new members to come along to the club first, meet our members, and have a chat before deciding what pathway is best for them.
