Learn To Sail
Whether you are completely new to sailing or looking to get back on the water, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved through Peterhead Sailing Club and Aberdeenshire Sailing Trust.
Aberdeenshire Sailing Trust provides the formal training side of things, running RYA courses, junior programmes, afterschool clubs, and instructor-led sessions for both adults and juniors.
At Peterhead Sailing Club, we provide opportunities to continue sailing afterwards, helping people build confidence, gain experience and enjoy getting out on the water regularly as part of a relaxed and friendly club.
Together, this creates a great pathway from beginner lessons through to independent club sailing.
Adult Sailing
If you are new to sailing, we usually recommend starting with an RYA Level 1 course. This introduces the basics of sailing in a supportive and beginner-friendly environment.
If you already have some experience, you may be suitable for RYA Level 2, which helps develop confidence and independence on the water.
Adult Courses
Junior Sailing
There are several ways for young people to get involved in sailing, from beginner sessions through to club sailing and racing.
Afterschool Club
A fun introduction to sailing for Primary 3 to S1 pupils.
Scurvy Pirates
A beginner watersports programme for children aged 5–7.
Youth Sailing Courses
The Aberdeenshire Sailing Trust also runs RYA Youth Stage courses and progression programmes throughout the year.
For juniors especially, we strongly recommend getting involved with AST training and programmes first, as they provide excellent instructor-led progression and a great introduction to the sport.
For junior sailors who have completed Stage 1 or above, the club also runs relaxed “Fun Friday” sailing sessions during the summer holidays.
Club Sailing
At Peterhead Sailing Club we focus on helping sailors continue developing their confidence and experience on the water.
We run:
Social sailing
Club racing
Youth sessions
Trips and events
BBQs and social evenings
Racing is completely optional, and many members simply enjoy getting out on the water socially.
For most club sailing sessions, we generally recommend sailors are sailing at around:
RYA Level 2 standard (Adults)
RYA Youth Stage 3 standard (Juniors)
or are otherwise comfortable sailing independently.
Boats & Equipment
For training courses run by the Aberdeenshire Sailing Trust, boats and equipment are provided.
Club boats may also be available to hire during club sessions, subject to availability.
Most equipment can be provided when starting out, so you do not need to own a boat before getting involved.
